When You Need a Level 2 Inspection
This type of inspection is typically required when you've made any changes to your chimney system, such as a fuel type switch or relining. It's also needed if you've experienced an external event that could impact the structure, like a fire or seismic activity. This inspection level is often necessary when selling or buying a home to ensure all parts of the chimney are working safely and efficiently.
Unlike a basic Level 1 inspection, a Level 2 inspection includes visual access to all parts of the chimney, such as attics and crawl spaces. This comprehensive check ensures that there are no hidden problems, like cracks or obstructions, that could pose safety risks later.
What a Level 2 Inspection Checks
The inspector will visually examine both the interior and the exterior of your chimney. This includes all accessible portions of the heating appliance and chimney connection, looking for damage or deterioration, ensuring that everything complies with building codes and safety standards.
Special equipment, such as a video camera, may be used to inspect internal areas that aren't easily visible. This allows the inspector to identify issues like flue liner damage, blockages, or any defects that could impact the chimney's safety and performance.
After the Inspection
Upon completion, the inspector will provide a detailed report of their findings. If any issues are found, they will recommend necessary repairs or further inspections to address potential safety hazards.
The goal of a Level 2 inspection is to diagnose any issues that could affect the efficiency or safety of your chimney. While the upfront cost of the inspection might seem high, it’s a crucial investment in ensuring the safety of your home.
